So I have taken the first steps to gardening, research! I am beyond excited to finally start researching and planning for my newest obsession. My first research journey into gardening is going to be basic tools. I have complied a list below of the things that I found most useful for starting out gardeners. I will update how I feel after using them!
1 . First off – Gloves!
Gloves are great protective equipment for avoiding cuts, thorns and blisters. The cheaper ones that you can find can be about $3, but I will say those run through pretty quick and aren’t as nice as other pairs.
These pair on the left are what you should look for; there are padding to help prevent blisters and they’re quite thick. I have used these for years just for general yard work, but they will be amazing for my gardening journey. I love the pink pair. You can find these on amazon here –https://amzn.to/4jYEckt

2. Hand Trowel
My favorite brand for all crafts are fskars, they are the absolute best. Whether I’m cutting fabric or cutting limbs on my front bush, I love using my Fiskars Ergo Garden Trowel. The stainless steel makes it easy to use for any job, and allows the trowel to be cleaned easily! It also makes it rust resistant, which is great for your garden.
This is an ideal tool for digging small holes and transporting plants. It is also a great tool for container gardens. Which is something I plan on doing for my vegetable garden here soon.
3. Pruning Shears
These are great for cutting small limbs, and harvesting vegetables. These are specifically 1″ pruning shears and they make trimming my small tree limbs and my bush limbs a breeze.
I have medium sized hands for a woman, and these feel great and I do not have to squeeze hard for them to actually cut the branches I need to. They are super helpful, and are Fiskars agiain! They are stainless steel which, like I said before with the trowel, is great for not rusting after using it.

4. Garden Fork
I do not own one of these yet, but these are great for turning your compost bins (the larger ones are the best for this), loosening your soil, and to aggregate your garden bed.
Using a garden fork is an essential tool when working with heavy soil or types of hard clay. I live in the upstate of South Carolina, and the red clay here is unbelievable let me tell you. It makes it near impossible just to garden in the ground – which is why I want to plant my veggies in a raise garden bed. This one had amazing reviews on amazon and I am going to purchase this one here soon – https://amzn.to/44duTr2
5. Hose Nozzle
Watering your garden with a plain hose can be a little too aggressive, especially if you’re trying not to drown your seedlings or spray your leaves into next week. A good hose nozzle gives you control with different spray settings—mist, shower, jet, and more. I personally love the “shower” setting for my herbs and flowers; it’s gentle but effective. I’m eyeing this one on Amazon that has thousands of 5-star reviews and a comfy grip for longer watering sessions – https://amzn.to/4kORiSn

6. Garden Spade
A sturdy garden spade is one of those tools that once you have it, you wonder how you lived without it. It’s great for edging beds, digging holes, and scooping soil or mulch. The flat edge gives you clean lines if you’re into making your garden look a little more put together. I haven’t grabbed one yet, but I’ve borrowed my mom’s before (hi Mom, if you’re reading this!) and it makes planting larger perennials way easier. I personally love the large flat spade, it makes edging my flower beds so easy – https://amzn.to/4nebfno
7. Garden Hoe
If you’re dealing with weeds—and let’s be real, who isn’t—you need a hoe. A simple stirrup or loop hoe can save you so much time and energy. I like that you can just glide it over your soil and it cuts weeds off at the root without disturbing your plants. Bonus: it kind of feels like you’re vacuuming your garden, which is weirdly satisfying.

8. Rake
There are two main kinds of rakes: leaf rakes (light and flexible) and bow rakes (stiff with metal tines). Leaf rakes are great for clearing debris like leaves or mulch, while bow rakes are better for spreading and leveling soil. If you’re working on raised beds or prepping new soil, the bow rake is your best friend. I have a cheap one from a local hardware store, but I’m probably going to upgrade this season now that I’m planting more intentionally. Here is one from amazon – https://amzn.to/3HSq0vZ
9. Kneeling Pad or Garden Kneeler
Okay, if your knees ever hurt just thinking about crouching in the garden then this one is for you. I started out without one and quickly realized it’s so worth having. Some even flip up into little stools, which is amazing when you’re harvesting or doing detail work. They’re super lightweight, and you can just hose them off if they get dirty. This one is thick and helps me not have knee pain – https://amzn.to/3G35ecw

10. Garden Tool Bag or Caddy
This is something I didn’t realize I needed until my tools started mysteriously vanishing into random corners of the yard. A garden caddy or tote helps keep everything together so you’re not making a million trips back and forth (especially helpful when you have a baby or toddler in tow!). I keep mine stocked with gloves, pruners, seed packets, and sunscreen so I can grab and go.
Final Thoughts
Starting a garden can feel a little overwhelming at first, but having the right tools truly makes all the difference. You don’t need to go out and buy everything at once so start with the basics and build your toolkit as you go. I’m still slowly collecting the things that make gardening easier (and honestly, more fun), and it’s been such a satisfying part of my daily routine. Whether you’re working with a tiny patio or planning raised beds like me, these tools will set you up for success.
If you have any must-have tools I missed, I’d love to hear about them! Happy planting 🌿
